The Onyx Hotel Boston:
Elite Service in the West End

Where it is: West End/Government Center

The Onyx Hotel Boston is one of the best kept secrets – and most beloved boutique hotels – in town.

This is a place where you can immerse yourself in bold, playful, chic design without breaking the bank. Style, location, service, and wallet-friendly prices: the Onyx has them all.

The Onyx Hotel in Boston enjoys an excellent location, nestled on a charming street – Portland Street – in the otherwise not-terribly-charming West End/Government Center area.

Look, there's absolutely nothing wrong with Boston's small West End/Government Center neighborhood (which from here on out, I'll refer to as just the West End). It's just ... what it sounds like: a heavy presence of a lot of large, blocky buildings that were built with an emphasis on maximizing interior use, not exterior beauty.

Fortunately, in addition to residing on the slick, urban strip that is Portland Street, the Onyx is just steps to one of the pearls of Boston tourism (and life): the city's historic North End neighborhood, and all the charm and character you could want . . . not to mention a lot of great food (cannoli lovers – or just dessert lovers – don't miss Mike's Pastry).

It's also just a short walk away from TD Garden, Boston's sports stadium, so if you plan to catch the Bruins or Celtics or Jay-Z, you're ideally situated at the Onyx. You can leave the hotel, make your way to the Garden on foot and be there in five minutes. For added convenience, the North Station T stop is about two blocks away.

Downtown Boston is ten minutes away on foot, Beacon Hill 15 minutes, and Back Bay 20 minutes.

And at the Onyx Hotel, Boston MA visitors will find interiors that are a bold, playful surprise in a neighborhood with an otherwise serious, institutional vibe. Open its doors and you'll step almost immediately into the Ruby Room Bar, a cozy nook decorated in sleek, graphic patterns that run throughout the hotel.

Sipping a drink in the Ruby Room's small, private space lends a more intimate feel to conversation. The wine hour held every evening at 5 pm in the Ruby Room restaurant feels like a reward at the end of a full day.

Guest rooms are reasonably sized and thoroughly outfitted with boutique amenities like beautiful beds, sleek desks, and flatscreen televisions. You won't necessarily want to throw a cocktail party in a standard guest room, but you will definitely feel enveloped in luxury and comfort. Refrigerators and coffee makers are available on request.

Your pets – any size, any number – are welcome at no additional charge. Dog-walking and dog-sitting services are available, as well as gourmet dog cookies at clean up bags. Most importantly, dog beds and scratching posts for cats are available for the length of your beloved furball's stay.

With all these attractive features, I haven't even gotten to what the Onyx does best: the service here is truly first–rate. This is a Kimpton hotel – Kimpton being a global company that runs an empire of highly individualized boutique hotels – and the Kimpton is well-known for the warm, professional responsiveness the company cultivates in its hotel staff.

Staffers leap into action if there is a problem with your room, if they know you are celebrating a special occasion, if they know you are having transportation struggles getting into or out of the city. They have been known to remember guests by name a year between visits!

The Onyx's private, design-y presence in a neighborhood that's super convenient but not known for glam, makes staying there feel a bit like being in on a secret that few other people know about.

The Onyx Hotel Boston gives you the rare experience of getting a boutique hotel experience at what are often (depending on season and availability) mid-range hotel rates. And the attentive service will put a smile on your face. Try it and you may find that it becomes your first choice for repeat visits to Boston.
