What Hotel in Boston Massachusetts
Is Like the Mandarin Oriental?

Where it is: Back Bay

If I had to choose a hotel in Boston Massachusetts in which to endure, say, a tax audit, I would choose the Mandarin Oriental. Because a stay at the Mandarin can honestly transform the entirety of your experience in the city.

Time spent at this superstar of Boston Back Bay hotels seems to recast everything in the city in warm golden hues – a missed cab, a late arrival to a meeting, even the worst a New England winter can sometimes throw at you.

Freezing rain? A windswept spray that rosies the cheeks. Giant puddles? Liquid pools of pewter and bronze. Traffic-stopping snowstorm? Showers of white cotton forming soft beds everywhere. IRS audit? Longish conversation with some starchy government chaps.

I'm serious.

How does the Mandarin Oriental do this? Well, this is truly elite (and understated, Asian-influenced) luxury. Remember I'm the one who told you when you're swimming in the sumptuous Frette sheets and Ploh pillows at the end of a long day.

My personal obsession is the Lifestyle rooms, each of which come with a daybed built into a wall of windows. When you're stretched out there in the morning, sipping coffee and reading a magazine, you may seriously contemplate asking a staff member to photograph you so that you will have evidence of a time when you were completely relaxed and content.

Just save the robe for upstairs. Because of its reputation and central Back Bay location, you'll have to refer to a very short list to find another hotel in Boston Massachusetts that is as popular a spot for events, local and otherwise. At any time it is possible to walk in and stumble across people standing around chatting in Asprey and Louboutins, or celebrities or pro athletes being discreetly shuffled about.

For views and convenience, you can't beat the Mandarin's perfectly-placed central Back Bay location. If you feel like some shopping but can't haul yourself one block away to the shoptopia that is Newbury Street, you can take the hotel's private, sheltered entrance – what bad weather, January Mandarin visitors? – into the Prudential Center's complex of upmarket shops and boutiques.

And if you've got business in the Hynes Convention Center, you can cut through the shops and exit into the convention center, never touching the soles of your shoes to exterior ground. The Mandarin is the sole luxury representative of Boston Massachusetts hotels that can offer that. (The only other hotels that offer that convenience are the Sheraton Boston Hotel, the Boston Marriott Copley Place, and the Westin Hotel Boston.

Then there is the list of Boston tourism highlights that are a walk away: the Common, the Public Garden, Fenway Park, Beacon Hill, and more.

In other words, the Mandarin has superpowers. Okay, maybe not but it the rare hotel in Boston Massachusetts that has the ability to make an already great city seem even better, and I swear, to make you feel like a better version of yourself. After living like this for a few days, who wouldn't?
